Declaration of Conformity
All of our protective motorcycle clothing is CE-Compliant. Here’s what that means
At Belstaff, we’ve been making clothing specifically designed for motorcyclists since 1924. We’re driven to create the best possible clothing to enhance your riding experience. And, of course, your safety is our priority.
By law, all motorcycle clothing in the UK has to be CE (European Conformity) approved. CE Certification is a harmonized European standard and means garments tested meet at least the minimum safety standards. Specifically, motorcycle clothing for leisure use has to meet the CE-standard EN 17092.
Since 21 April 2018, motorcycle clothing has been classed as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and is required to be tested and certified by an independent body. At Belstaff, we are legally responsible to ensure all of our motorcycle clothing is CE approved. The CE and UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) testing and certification process focuses on six main areas. Dimensional stability, impact energy absorption, (Class AAA and AA), impact abrasion resistance, seam strength, tear strength, fit and ergonomics.
CE LEVELS EXPLAINED
All of our protective motorcycle clothing is marked with either CE Level 1 or CE Level 2 certification. All protective motorcycle clothing is tested using varying degrees of impact force. The level of force a garment has to withstand to be passed with CE Level 2 certification is greater than the level of force a garment is required to withstand to be passed with Level 1 certification.
While Level 1 certified garments are more than suitable for a quick spin, motorcycling is an inherently dangerous activity and we recommend buying clothing with the highest level of protection. It’s a slight misconception that CE Level 2 clothing is made solely for pro-level racing.
No protective clothing can protect you 100% in the event of an accident, but CE-approved apparel gives you the best chance of walking away from an accident unscathed.
